Tennessee Justice Center: The Past, Present, and Future of Protecting Vulnerable Families*

Michele Johnson

Shelby Dodson

Michele Johnson, Executive Director of the Tennessee Justice Center, and Shelby Dodson, Equal Justice Works Elder Justice AmeriCorps Fellow, will give an hour presentation introducing the audience to TJC. The presentation will be divided into three sections: History of TJC, Moving Systems, and Taking Action.

In the first part, Michele Johnson will recount the founding of TJC, focusing on the parts played by bar leaders to prevent a two-tier legal system and ensure access to justice for the vulnerable among us. Transitioning, they will briefly touch on the significant victories and setbacks of the past 21 years. In the second part, Michele and Shelby will summarize the ways TJC is moving systems and protecting safety net programs in light of the expected changes from Washington. This part will include data showing how repeal of or cuts to important programs will more severely impact women and children. Last, LAW members can learn how to get involved: through joining TJC’s pro bono network, serving on a development committee or our board, or spreading the word about the fight by engaging others and by being a part of TJC’s online community.
