Women Leaders in Academia

Katharine (Kate) Schaffzin

Dean, Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law

Melanie D. Wilson

Dean Emeritus and Lindsay Young Distinguished

Professor of Law

University of Tennessee College of Law

In the last two decades, the number of women deans of law schools has quadrupled. Hear from two of Tennessee’s most prominent women leaders in academia. Dean Schaffzin and Dean Wilson will discuss their leadership paths in legal academia and the litigation skills that have translated to those careers.

Schaffzin and Wilson clerked for federal judges and engaged in private practice before transitioning to careers in academia. They will share the commonalities they have observed leading in the courtroom and leading in the classroom.  They will also discuss how their litigation experiences inform their approach to educating future lawyers—including preparation for practice, the impact of recent changes to the format and administering of the Tennessee Bar Exam, and fostering ethics in lawyering beginning with the law school experience.

Join LAW at its last CLE for 2020 and stay tuned for details about LAW's virtual holiday mixer in December! It has been a crazy year and it's time to celebrate! Watch for details, coming soon!

Register up until 10:00 am on the 17th!

Login information will be emailed to you an hour prior to the program.
