First Amendment Basics and Legal Observer Training

The right to assemble peacefully rests at the core of functioning democratic systems and is closely related to other cornerstones of democracy enshrined in the First Amendment, such as freedom of expression and freedom of association.  Legal observers are impartial volunteers who attend demonstrations and marches to ensure that everyone’s right to peaceful protest is upheld. During protests, observers must be seen as neutral by those present and observe rather than demonstrate or participate in the protest, suspending their own First Amendment rights to protect the First Amendment rights of others.

This CLE will cover the law surrounding the freedom of speech and assembly, including how these constitutional rights may be regulated and what actions may violate those rights. Tom and Stella will then describe the role of legal observers and what issues they may encounter.
