What is Being Done to Change the Criminal Legal System in Tennessee?

Our panelists will address their efforts to change the criminal legal system in Tennessee. They will discuss Nashville’s use of wealth-based pre-trial detention and give an overview of the Nashville Community Bail Fund, the need for a community bail fund, and who the bail fund serves. They will talk through the restorative justice movement, what it is and why it has proven to be highly effective in addressing the needs of people harmed by crime and lowering rates of youth violence, arrests, and repeat offenses. The group will also touch on indigent defense and issues prisons have encountered during the pandemic.

Speakers: Dawn Deaner, Founder & Executive Director, Choosing Justice Initiative; Wesley Dozier, Equal Justice Works Fellow, Just City Memphis; Travis Claybrooks, CEO, Raphah Institute; and Rahim Buford, Nashville Community Bail Fund Manager & Director of Unheard Voices Outreach. Program Co-chair Rachel Berg for Polsinelli will moderate.
